Traditionally, students had to choose between the Master of Science (MS) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees while thinking to pursuing higher education. That is relatively easy decision based on the kind of work (Technical v Non-technical i.e. Management, Strategy, Finance, Consulting etc.) you intend to do upon graduation. However, over the last decade there are some newer programs which have been introduced by various schools - namely the Master of Engineering Management (MEM), MS Management Science & Engineering (MS&E) and the Master of Management Studies (MMS) (also called the Masters in Management or MIM program in some schools).

While all these are in some ways an alternative to an MBA for a candidate with less work experience there are significant differences between these programs and in fact even between the same program at different schools. While these videos can get you started and give you an idea about the various degrees / paths, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I'd suggest that if you're considering one of these programs then dive deep and conduct extensive research, burn the midnight oil and then choose the program which best fits your profile and career aspirations.

Personally, I'm a firm believer of pursuing a traditional MBA at some point of time in your life. However, I also believe that when you take up a job after your undergrad you don't get a great exposure unless you're working abroad or in a unicorn startup or a Fortune 100 kind of company. So, especially for students in emerging markets, the MEM / MS&E / MMS or MIM seem like a great opportunity to move to the US, get an advanced degree and start building a career in an area of interest. You can always go back to school in 4-5 years to get a 1 or 2 year MBA. This is just my personal opinion and each individual's choices are determined by a variety of factors including but not restricted to their academic background, areas of interests, family situation, financial situation, geographical flexibility etc.

So jump in, do your research and speak to people who've been in your shoes before making the decision. Good luck, and irrespective of what you choose FlyGrads is here to support you thru the application process!
