The "FlyGrads" Journey

When I decided to pursue my graduate studies (MS) from the US, I met and spoke with a lot of Education Consultants in India. Right away, I noticed two major issues.
First, in the initial college selection phase I noticed that there was a conflict of interest. While my target was to go the best university I possibly can, the counsellor’s target was to get me as many admits as possible. Those who have been thru the process will realize that these are significantly different goals. Based on my test scores and background, I was inclined to apply to a few more ambitious schools, and a couple of safe schools. The counsellors however wanted me to apply to numerous safe schools so that I receive many admits which reflects well on them and their brand.
Secondly, many of them told me that they would write my SOP. This is something that surprised me. Just by asking me a few questions and making me fill out a questionnaire how can anyone possibly know my entire life story? How can they know why I’m so passionate about a particular program at a particular school? What candidates aspiring to study abroad need to understand is that NO ONE can write / tell your story better than you. The admissions committee wants to hear your story, your strengths, weaknesses and things that make YOU unique. It can come only from you.
This is when the seed for the idea of FlyGrads was sown! I’m aware that every program is different and every school is looking for something different from the applicants. This is where I plan to leverage my network which I’ve built over the past 6-7 years. Since I’ve had the opportunity to study/work/live in 4 different continents at some point in my life, it’s very likely we can find some from my network at your dream school. This will personalize and customize the entire process, something I feel is very critical.
